Why 70 for 70? - Wisconsin Architects Foundation

Wisconsin Architects Foundation

Why 70 for 70?

The Wisconsin Architects Foundation (WAF) has supported initiatives to promote and enhance the profession of architecture in Wisconsin for 70 years.

To celebrate our 70th year, we have launched the 70 for 70 Campaign, with a goal of raising $70,000 by June 30, 2024. We are asking for your help to address two important needs:

  1. Increase Architectural Registration by encouraging more people trained in architecture to pursue licensure, while lowering the financial barriers associated with the process by establishing a new grant opportunity to cover costs associated with ARE examination, NCARB annual memberships, and study materials.

  2. Assist with Post Graduation Financial Need by establishing a new grant opportunity to cover portions of student loan debt.

Why $70,000?

In 1953, the year of our founding, annual in-state tuition at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) was approximately $150, a stark contrast to today’s cost of around $10,000 for a year at the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning for a Wisconsin resident, leaving students with an average student loan debt of $37,000 upon graduation. In addition, the higher cost of living due to recent inflation, the cost of preparing for and taking the exams, and modest wages for architectural interns combine to make the lives of our emerging professionals challenging.

WAF would like to help ensure the health and prosperity of our profession by providing financial support to these individuals who are seeking licensure; it is for this reason that we are dedicating the fundraising efforts for our 70th Anniversary to this cause and will establish an annual award to assist the newest members of our profession.

In 2022, only 20 individuals in Wisconsin earned their architectural license. WAF is on a mission to elevate that number and empower more emerging professionals in the world of architecture. With $70,000, WAF could double that number by covering exam licensing fees for 40 aspiring architects.

Let’s Make a Lasting Impact!

Architecture is more than buildings; it’s a catalyst for positive change. As we celebrate our 70th year, we recognize the pivotal role architects play in shaping the world around us. However, to meet the challenges of tomorrow, we need more voices, perspectives, and innovative minds in the profession.

At the heart of WAF’s 70 for 70 Campaign strategy is a dedication to empowering the future of architecture. By strategically directing funds towards initiatives that support licensure for emerging professionals, the foundation aims to address the pressing need for a more diverse and resilient architectural community. Each donation becomes a catalyst for change, helping bridge the gap between dreams and reality for aspiring architects.

WAF invites everyone to be a part of this transformative movement. Whether you’re an architect, a design enthusiast, or someone who believes in the power of creating positive spaces, your contribution matters. If the Wisconsin Architect Foundation’s initiatives past and present resonate with your architectural path, and you would like to support the future of the architectural profession in Wisconsin, consider donating today!
